Economic Collapse and Family Survival

We are told that we have reached the bottom of the economic trench in our current global crisis. Economic gurus are paraded daily on every media outlet, as if to convince and reassure the American people that all is well. Yet millions upon millions of Americans are jobless or homeless and many more are preparing to join this growing number. A downward spiral that continues through this uncharted abyss with no end in sight. What are American Families to do at such a time in history?

Regardless of whether or not our Government can deal with the current situation, our number one priority is to the safety and well being of ourselves and our loved ones. Steps need to be taken to insure that we can continue to meet our most fundemental obligations. This is not the time for inaction or apathy or even denial because these can have grave consequences for you and your loved ones.

I am not trying to scare you into a corner with your head between your legs but instead to rally my fellow Americans to empower themselves through potentially tough times.

We as individuals, couples and families need to start planning now and I mean NOW for the possibility of economic times that may be much worse than the Great Depression. Imagine the money in your bank gone, the supermarkets empty in a matter of minutes with resupply not in the immediate future and your place of employment is, until further notice, closed. What do you do when you run out of food at home and maybe water with no power, heat or gasoline to drive somewhere? What do you tell your child when he says "Daddy I'm Hungry".

There is nothing wrong with being prepared in an emergency. You will not be crazy but prudent if you plan for risks that you may face in the future. We teach our Boyscouts to "always be prepared" and so should we. We must prepare within the context of our own lives and that takes careful planning.

Should I stop paying my bills and quit my job? Absolutely NOT!!! Just because you see potential danger doesn't mean that things will definately happen.

What if nothing happens? Great!!! I will be the one eating my stored food and beverage celebrating and I guess I won't need to go to the store right away.

I would like to offer a few suggestions on what to focus on. First of all, any preparation is better than none. The degree to which you prepare is an individual decision based on your expectation of risk, your current means and the situation that you find yourself in.

Think about were you live. Do you live in the City , Suburbs, Rural area or the Country? Do you live in a warm or colder climate? Different situations require different preparation. The following are important topics and should be planned for separately.

Water and water storage-You don't last long without it. If the city or town shuts down the water what do you do?

Shelter and Heat- If you live in a cold winter climate you need locally available fuel supply that is renewable eg. Wood. Don't forget magnesium fire starters and other ways of starting a fire because matches and lighters run out. You might be better off leaving the area and staying with relatives whom you have assisted in getting prepared.

Food and beverage-Store what you can. If you live paycheck to paycheck start slow always taking care of your regular priorities in everyday life like paying bills first. Store Rice, Beans, Pasta, and other dry storables, Canned meats, Sugar, Honey, Flour, Peanut Butter. They say it is better to look for food when you are not hungry.

Remember God/Nature made a world that is renewable and reproduces. Grow gardens and can and jar. Keep Chickens for eggs, meat and manure for your garden. Dairy Goats produce 1-2 Gal milk per day that does not require pasturization, meat, manure, and hides. Rabbits produce fur, meat, manure and can reproduce quickly. Sheep produce fleece and meat, etc. All these creatures graze greens in the spring and summer but require feed that must also be stored in winter. I recommend lowest grade Dairy Cattle feed for all (Chickens,Goats, Rabbit, Sheep), It is currently still inexpensive at 12 dollars / 100 lbs. These are all commodities that can be used as food or trade for other things.

The ideal amount to store is six months until you can harvest more but as I said, something is better than nothing.

Fishing and Hunting-Try to acquire snare and snap traps which are quiet and reusable, Lots of fishing line, Vermiculture (Earthworms) can come in handy for fishing and animal feed and they turn your compost into usable fertile dirt. Don't forget lots of hooks and nets.

Medications for medical conditions, antibiotics, first aid supplies and cold, flu and pain remedies.

Clothing for all weather and sewing materials.

Rifles, handguns and Ammunition if legally applicable and feel comfortable to possess.

Candles, lanterns, flashlights, toiletries, radios. Camping gear is always nice to have.

Finally, how to and pleasure Books and games and cards to spend quality time with those we cherish.

Our society and the world is due for a change and change is always scary at first but necessary. We just need to get past the initially difficult hurdles of the moment. We have created an unsustainable system of consumption and greed. However, America will not perish beneath the waves of history but shall be transformed. What it will become is ultimately up to us. God Bless us and God Bless America.

  1. Great Article! I have already begun to prepare but great information I hadn't thought about

  2. This reminds me so much of the Y2K scare and all the preparation so many folks put into that. I prepared for 2 months and, while thankful I didn't really need any of it, I also learned a lot about the everyday benefits of a well-stocked pantry. And several days without power made me appreciate my wood stove and oil lanterns. You might also include info on making a solar oven and urban wildcrafting (dandelions, etc)

  3. I guess the previous poster will be one less person on the population scale.

  4. Personally, I don't think our country will deteriorate to the extent of total ruin but it never hurts to plan ahead. Much of what you suggest is practiced by members of the LDS (Mormon) church. There is much to be learned by observing those who live a lifestyle different than our own. I have an RV that I keep stocked with food, water, and fuel in addition to having a full pantry and water stored in the storm cellar. Living in tornado country and away from town makes it prudent to take these precautions. I'm no longer a young woman, so I want to stay as independent as possible. Having a strong faith in God also helps when things get ugly.

  5. Very good post!! 100% accurate.I really do not see how depression will not happen. No good jobs, high levels of debt, etc. We can not buy unnecessary items now ie ipods, big tv's, $100.00 sneakers etc. Prepare for the worst and pray for the best. Buy tools, food ,if possible move to rural mid-west small towns or farm acreages. Become self sufficient as much as possible. God Bless

  6. The bomb shelter crowd. Better to be an informed voter and not a pro-Obama sheeple. Figure out why the collapse really happened or do not vote.

  11. As you can see many Americans are walking around in denial that such things can never occur to the USA. I don't think your insane at all and more sane than many. Thanks for the info.

  12. need to look at the root cause of the great depression... banks collapsed and people lost their money.

The governments around the world have prevented this collapse.

Therefore, it's getting more likely that the end is near. Getting prepared for high inflation might be a better reason to stock up while things are cheap.

  15. Badly written sentence: "I am not trying to scare you into a corner with your head between your legs but instead to ..."

Should be written: "I am not trying to scare you into a corner with your head between your knees but instead to ..."

This article says nothing about cigarettes, tobacco, booze, and junk food. People who consume these items will have less money than the rest and will be begging for handouts.

People who obsess over celebrities will have les money than the rest and will be begging for handouts.

The flakes in society have caused the current problems, it remains to be seen how much more trouble they will cause.

  17. People need to grow up. Agreed with the person that wrote, It's called life. It's media and articles like this one that have negatively affected and hurt families across the country. What ever happened to the "My only regret is that I have one life to give" attitude. While democracy demands it's constituents make their voice heard, true patriotism would challenge you to look for ways of bringing us together, not pulling us apart. God Bless The U.S.A.

  18. i really believe at least a partial collapse is coming...things cannot continue on the way they are with at least 50% of peoples lifes being paid for by the work of the other 50%..and the government so out of control that continues to hire966,000 new hires) when their funding sources(the private sector, losing 600,000) is shrinking, plus unfunded pension funds of our government which only will cause a collapse..buy guns and ammo to defend yourself against the blind followers of the o man

  19. Very good article. Has anyone here read "One Second After" by William Fortstchen? I don't think we are going to collapse anytime soon, but it helps to be somewhat prepared just in case.

    ReplyDelete
  20. For they guy that said this article "negatively affected and hurt families across the country". How is that? How does preparing for emergencies equate to "pulling us apart"? and do you know what happened to "my only regret"? It's when Veterans come home from War and told by Uncle Sam ..."sorry kid your on your own". If you want loyalty you got to show it. Our government is obviously not on the American peoples side but on the Banksters and corporate CEO's side. What a stupid person!!!

  21. The economy will collapse and the people will be angered when they find out how our government has lied to them. There could be violence as a result of bad economic conditions and from the finacial losses that people will suffer. Pension, 401k accounts, Social Security, Bonds and the FDIC may not be able to pay everyone.
I totally agree with preparedness. Hope for the best but prepare for the worse.
I have been writing about this for a while. I have similar views. Visit my website and get more inforamation.

  22. It is amazing how arrogant we are to think that our society is so advanced as to not suffer the same fate as other civilizations throughout history. (Remember Rome)? During the Great Depression, a majority of people had the ability to produce some of their own food. Today less than 2% of Americans do. We are extremely dependant upon our complex infrastructure for our basic needs. Look at what happened in New Orleans after Katrina. I think it is not only "sane" to prepare to provide for your family's needs during these times, it is foolhardy not to.

  24. On average, the unemployment rate increases by 0.5% a month. It was 9.9% in the month of June. However, I think this estimate is inaccurate -- as 'they' do not include all those who already gave up and are homeless or those who found other means, like stealing. And so, I would say that the number is much higher, in the 15% area.
Anyway, let us assume that 9.9% is correct. By December 2011 it will reach 25%. The only possible result: anarchy of unimaginable proportions. In comparison, what had taken place in South Central Los Angeles back in the 1992 would be child's play.

And it will be the same for the rest of the world since what happens economically in the U.S. is directly connected to all other nations.

Back in the 1930 only one thing saved the world from a total collapse - World War II. And only World War III will save us this time. And by this I mean a TOTAL WAR – with bombs falling on OUR heads here in the States – with foreign soldiers killing OUR women and children – with the use of nuclear weapons and other means of mass destruction. A TOTAL WAR – and not just some ‘Mickey Mouse’ war in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I actually don’t know what to do. What? Buy a gun and do what? Kill the man or a woman who tries to get my can of beans? Shoot the people who try to set a fire to my house and then dig a mass grave to bury them? Sit at home in the dark, silent as a mouse, pretend that ‘no one’s home,’ ration my food, poop in the garage, and hope that rescue will one day knock on my door and say, “You can come out now, it is over.” Do you have any idea what the hell you are talking about when you propose that I should store dry goods and water? What else should I do? Paint my car black and tell everyone I am Mad Max and that I will get the bad guys?

I don’t think anyone has an idea what it will be like when anarchy arrives…

  28. Im not sure whats coming. I do see an economy damaged beyond repair. I see our treasurey bond auctions failing the last few months, and i see our foreign investors running. The longer a collapse takes, the harder it will hit us. We are trying to fix a gun shot wound with a band aid here. As for preparing... I certainly am. Some may think its crazy, and thats fine. But what kind of man would i be if i wasnt at least prepared for whats around the corner. Before you call all this crazy, i challenge you to think of your wife and children, and what you might say to them if an emergency strikes. Im not saying form a militia and live in a bunker. But just prepare. Dont be that idiot standing in the front yard taunting the tornado and laughing at the people who are getting their families to saftey... Think of a plan as common sense maintanance. You wouldnt drive around with a flat spare tire would you? Sure your tire probably wont blow out on the side of the road today, but, who knows? Anyway, God bless, and God bless the USA.

  29. History doesn't go backwards, there can't be another 1929. To me, it looks more like system collapse, some resemblance with the former Soviet Union. It doesn't matter how the system is called or how effective it was before: if it's over it is over. There are 2 ways to change/update the system : peacefully
, through reforms or wait till chaos steps in, rather dangerous thing in the country where every other one owns a weapon and regular troops stationed all over the world, but not at home.

We had fun whiles others wasted away in shelters or DIED. This next event is going to be bigger beyond belief. If you don't look after your family now(physically and spiritualy)your anguish
    and pain will be unimaginable.
I have increased my preps to 1 year (4 People) tripled raised bed gardens, added chickens(layers&roasters)3 years firewood under cover and I don't plan on stopping.

  31. For those who want to know what an economic collapse will be like I would suggest visiting www. ferfal.blogspot.com. Try guard posts on street intersections, steel fences and brickwalls, kids can't play on the sidewalks, did I mention this is an upper middle class suburb?
In all seriousness folks, economic experts like Karl at The Market Ticker,
Jim Sinclair's Mineset, Chris Laird at Prudent Squirrel all agree, there is no
way out of this mess other than a global economic default. It is no longer a matter of if, only the when is unresolved.
I guess all I can say to all the posters out there that get their breakfast at Denny's,have pieces of paper for fire protection and no fire extinguisher, depend on 911 for personal protection or medical emergencies and don't have a gun or first aid kit, have their net worth tied up in bank statements, you're right we're all just a little delusional.

  32. I'm not an American. As a Canadian who lives in a very rural community, I have long been aware of the benefits of being prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. Now it seems the whole world is threatened by the potentiality of water shortages, global financial collapse and possibly even a widening middle east war that may end up going nuclear.

Being prepared is an excellent way to protect your family. Anyone can stick their head in the ground like an ostrich, but remember what part of you is vulnerable in that particular stance.

    Good luck to all!

  33. Wow. Some people are so fucking blind!! What the fuck is "patriotism" gonna fucking do for you? Let me ask you one thing? What in the hell has your precious government ever done for you? They are a bunch of self-serving aristocratic pieces of shit. They don't care about YOU, they don't care about ME...get that through your ignorant god-fearing head. The USA disgusts me...it's a consumerist culture...based on materialistic bullshit that DOES NOT matter...everyone's making fun of the native americans...at least they knew how to be self-sustaining...they didn't have worry about planning for a flawed economic system to collapse...because they were fucking smarter than that. I swear if one more person says God Bless America I'll blow my goddamn brains out. You brainwashed ignorant backwards motherfuckers....you will be the FIRST to die after a collapse..better hope your god feels like saving your pathetic ass.
